Hypothesis about the “Cruz de Fierro” (iron cross) of Foncebadón exhibited in the Museum of the Caminos (Astorga, Spain) and reflection on its name

The Iron Cross of Foncebadón (León, Spain) is one of the main landmarks of the via francigena of the Way of St. James (Camino de Santiago). There has been much reflections on the origin of these “murias” or “majanos” (groups of stones) but little on the cross itself as a material object, a task that is addressed in this contribution, in which it is proposed that the cross currently exhibited in the Museo de los Caminos (Astorga) is much recent than one might expect. Finally, a reflection is added on the different ways of referring to it (“Cruz de fierro”, “ferro” or “hierro”) in historical literature and documentation.

The Company of Ciudad Rodrigo in the Armada of 1588

The Invincible Armada of 1588 holds a specific place in the research of international relations and politics during the Early Modern Age. It constituted a crucial event that mobilized an enormous amount of material and human resources, directly affecting the daily life of many Castilian cities. This study examines the company that was recruited in the land of Ciudad Rodrigo, from its formation by royal order in 1586 to the latest reports on this group of soldiers in 1589. All of this serves to create a social history of one of the many companies that were recruited to serve in this enterprise.
