https://revistas.unileon.es/index.php/anada/article/view/8389

This paper examines the origin of the Lady of Arintero, the virgo bellatrix of León. After dismissing some theories that claim that the Lady of Arintero is a historical figure, her story can be divided into two periods. Firstly, a poorly documented archaic Lady who seems to make use of the chivalric tale to embellish a local nobility title with probable origins in the growing transit between Asturias and León. This was followed by the modern Lady, who emerged between the 16th and 17th centuries, as the culmination of a series of processes of hidalguía and privilegio requested by the García y González family of Arintero (León) between 1516 and 1591. To do so, they obtained a forged certificate from Juan de Ortega Muñoz, heir to a former king of arms of Castile, an occupation that had long dealt with genealogical arrangements. Ortega wrote a succinct account in which the Lady of the romance fights in the War of the Castilian Succession, in a document reminiscent of other famous contemporary grants. Subsequently, a process of gradual addition included other attributes typical of the virgo bellatrix, of traditional Leonese culture and of the Arintero family itself. The link between this lineage with the certificate of Ortega Muñoz and the modern Lady is proved by the heraldic and documentary evidence, in a connection successfully extended to the present day.
Rafael Maldonado de Guevara y Delgado

https://revistas.unileon.es/index.php/anada/article/view/8390

Two Asturleonese literary works of the Bardón family are studied in this paper. The first one is “Bando d’un pedaneo”, a text of dubious authorship included in Cuentos en dialecto leonés that has been attributed alternately to Caitano Álvarez Bardón and Emilio Bardón Sabugo. As it will be proved, it is really an adaptation of the poem of the same name published by the Asturian writer Rufino Martínez Vázquez in 1896. This paper investigates Martínez
Vázquez’s relationship with León and reveals an unknown conection between Asturleonese literatures on both sides of the Cantabrian Mountains. The second one—titled “Suceso nu mercau d’Astorga”— is a short story found in the 1934 first issue of the Revista del Ateneo Obrero de León. It has the signature of Un Fulgazán, and the research will show that it is in fact a work by Emilio Bardón Sabugo unknown until now. Published perforce decades before, it increases the number of works that we know by this author.
Iván Cuevas

https://revistas.unileon.es/index.php/anada/article/view/8391

Salvadora Valcarce Martínez was a woman who devoted her life to teaching. After attending the Institute and the Escuela Normal of León, she obtained her teaching qualification in 1930. After the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic, the young teacher had to take training courses to adapt to the new modern and egalitarian education system. She passed all of them successfully, so she was able to exercise her profession as an interim teacher in
Cabeza de Campo from 1933 to 1934, the year in which she was granted a post at the Escuela Unitaria de Niñas in Cimanes del Tejar. It was there where she was able to deploy all her skills as a teacher in line with the new pedagogical principles, but the civil war brought the educational line she pursued to a halt and had to change it in line with the National Catholic gender role model, which required women to perform the duties of wife and mother. Her resilient character allowed her to continue with her pedagogical work, and she did so at a prominent level, as recognized by the academic authorities with honours and various prestigious awards. After 47 years as a teacher, she retired and was awarded numerous official recognitions and the lasting affection of three
generations of students in Cimanes del Tejar (León).
Beatriz García Prieto

https://revistas.unileon.es/index.php/anada/article/view/8392

This paper studies the traditional ceremony of the cantaderas in the city of León, which was celebrated in the past during the Assumption of Mary festivities, from August 14 to 17, with particular attention to the leading figures of the festival: the cantaderas themselves and, especially, the character of the sotadera.
Nicolás Bartolomé Pérez
