Family businesses have certain peculiarities that can be considered strengths in their attitude towards Business Social Responsibility (BSR), like having a solid business culture with shared values, a long-term orientation and a special feeling towards the local community. Nonetheless, there are other aspects that can be considered as weaknesses, including nepotism or centralized decision making. Despite the large body of academic literature on BSR, there are not many studies that are only focused on the particular case of small family businesses. Given the importance of family businesses in most economies, this paper will contribute to fill this gap in the literature. The aim of this study is to determine the specific aspects of the small first-generation family business that may hinder or facilitate the adoption of responsible behavior.
