Abstract

Setaria equina (ABILGAARD, 1789) is a parasite very often found in tlw marslws formed by the Guadalquivir river (Seville. Spain) and in sorne groups of equines it is found even in a 100 % of said animals.
Microfilariae have a vespertine periodicity reaching concentrations up to 1,343 larvae/ ml of blood.
The presence of sheaths in microfilarias can be easily and quickly shown, without any tinction, by dishemoglobinating the non-coagulated blood with distilled water and by studying the centrifuged material.
Even when microfilaremias are intense health of animals seems to be satisfactory. Scrotal edema has been observed only in one case.
«Franozan 40 %» (Diethyl-Carbanazine Citrate) at a dosage of 5 ml / 100 Kg. body weight, administered on three consecutive days, the treatment being repeated after 15 days, eliminated the microfilaremia in three animals out of a total of four animals treated. Scrotal edema disappeared in the fourth animal but microfilaremia did not.
