O judo chega à Califórnia: Judo vs. Luta no Oeste dos Estados Unidos, 1900-1920

Este ensaio analisa a imigração japonesa-americana que se verificou no Oeste dos Estados Unidos sob o ponto de vista dos desportos, examinando, especificamente, vários confrontos entre judocas e lutadores célebres na Califórnia entre 1900 e 1920. A popularidade destes confrontos demonstra a complexa relação entre os japoneses-americanos e a cultura europeia-americana dominante nos Estados Ocidentais durante este período. Esta complexidade, revela-se, em primeiro lugar, observando o modo como as artes marciais estão estreitamente relacionadas com a identidade nacional e étnica. A grande tradição no mundo do espectáculo, tanto no judo como na luta, conduziu à realização de diversos confrontos que resultaram como muito interessantes para os europeus-americanos naquela época. Estes encontros despertaram um interesse sobre a cultura japonesa e um desejo de verem reforçados os esteriótipos e as tendências nacionalistas durante o período de incertitude.
