在中国文字改革的历史上，曾发生过一场几乎全社会的精英和知识分子都参与的持续了半个多世纪的废除汉字的运动，汉字拉丁化风潮在今天人们的日常生活中仍然留有很多痕迹。本文通过对历史上汉字拉丁化的发展过程的梳理，探讨其背后深刻的政治、经济和文化原因，来阐释汉字这一古老的文字的难以取代性及其在历史长河中对中国国情的适应性。
