A mediados del siglo XVI, los misioneros europeos comenzaron a llegar a China, dejando en la historia un gran número de diarios de viaje, escritos e informes. Estos eruditos misioneros observaron meticulosamente los sistemas políticos y jurídicos de China. Este estudio se centra en el análisis de las interpretaciones del derecho chino por parte de los misioneros de la dinastía Ming y examina el contexto histórico detrás de estas percepciones, así como su interacción con la cultura europea contemporánea. Los hallazgos sugieren que el derecho chino se presentó en la cultura europea como un “otro” cultural de un período específico. Esta representación no solo refleja la auto-reflexión y auto-percepción europea, sino también su entendimiento inherente sobre su propia cultura. Aunque estas descripciones tienen una base real, en gran medida son extensiones imaginativas del marco cultural europeo.
