Abstract

In this article, we will present the main aspects of the profile of Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos, one of the most nationally and internationally recognized Mexican feminist academics. Our aim is to present the most significant elements of her career, her main contributions to Latin American and Ibero-American feminism, emphasizing her contributions to Mexican feminism, as well as her political participation, both nationally and internationally, in the fields of legislation, gender justice, human rights, democracy, and building a culture of peace.

Author Biographies

Patricia Ravelo Blancas, CIESAS - México

She holds a PhD in Sociology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. She specialized in Women's Studies at El Colegio de México. She is a professor and researcher at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies in Social Anthropology and belongs to the National System of Researchers. From 2001 to 2009, she served as a visiting professor at the University of Texas at El Paso. She coordinated the Diagnostic Research on Femicide Violence in Chihuahua at the Chamber of Deputies (2004-2006). She co-coordinated the CIESAS-UNAM-CONACYT project "Application of Action Protocols for the Prevention, Response, Punishment, and Eradication of Violence against Women in Southeastern Mexico" (2011-2013). She received an award for the publication of her doctoral thesis, "Work, Illness, and Resistance among Seamstresses in Mexico City: A Study of Their Representations, Experiences, and Subjectivity," awarded by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare in 2001. She co-coordinates the project "Gender, Violence, and Cultural Diversity" and is co-chair of the Marcela Lagarde y de los Ríos International Chair for Gender Violence Studies at CIESAS. Her areas of specialization are gender, work, migration, gender violence, and femicide.

Susana Báez Ayala, Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juaréz - México

PhD in Theory of Literature and the Arts and Comparative Literature from the University of Granada. Specialist in Women's Studies from COLMEX. Professor-researcher at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, member of the National System of Researchers and Researchers Level I. Co-coordinates the Binational Seminar Diversity without Violence, co-responsible for the Marcela Lagarde de los Ríos International Chair. She obtained the Kira Medal (2022). Member of the GIM in Gender Violence Alert in Durango (2017). She has coordinated books such as Utopías y topías critical thinking social vulnerability and violence against women on the Mexico-US border, 2023; Escrituras en Resistencia, workshop on narratives against femicidal violence (Ciudad Juárez-Mexico City), 2020; and in the theater he wrote: “The Faces of Silence”, 2019 and “Tierra Caliente”, 2016.
