Abstract

This essay enquires into some factors affecting the problem of gender violence, particularly the concept of citizenship for women in relation to the State, and the vision the Catholic Church has of women as members of a spiritual and social community. State and Church claims of neutrality or objectivity in their use of terms such as “gender”, “citizenship” or “virtue” are questioned in relation to violence against women.
